How to hand in your notice, respectfully and professionally

Deciding to leave your job and handing in your notice can be a difficult process, but it is important to know how to hand in your notice in a professional manner.

  • Firstly, take a moment to reflect and think over your reasons for leaving and be sure it is what you want.
  • Once you’ve decided that handing in your notice is what you want to do, then take time to write a professional letter of resignation. - Never just send a text or email.
  • Out of respect, keep it private until you’ve told your manager. As they may want to keep it confidential a little longer.
  • Once your notice is written, book a date with your manager for a private one to one meeting.
  • Practice what you want to say beforehand as it’s easy to forget what you want to say or even worse, say the wrong thing. Make sure you note down what you want to get across.
  • Remain professional by keeping your reasons for leaving, professional. However, be honest to an extent.
  • Have a leave date in mind and try to agree a date that is sooner rather than later.
  • Don’t be swayed, remember the reasons that made you look for a new job in the beginning. It’s quite common for companies to try and change your mind, but once your notice has been handed in, don’t be convinced to stay. We witness 80% of candidates who accept a counteroffer still leave within 6 months, because the fundamental reasons they started looking for a new role haven’t changed.
  • Lastly, make sure you remain positive and productive throughout your notice period, continue to impress your current employer as you want to secure a good reference at the end.
